Okay, I am not really a shopaholic, however, I don’t mind indulging in a one off souvenir shopping spree or thrift / unique/local buys while traveling.
Since it was my very first visit to the Arctic and Scandinavia, of course, I simply HAD to take home some goodies and try shopping in Tromso Norway.
It helped that my friend Shivani is a big-time shopaholic and souvenir aholic (is that even a word – if not, we should curate it for her).
Quick Book Guide to Tromso, Norway
Heading to Tromso for a last-minute trip and looking for the best hotels and tours to book without doing any research? Here are the highly recommended top selling hotels and tours you CANNOT go wrong with.
Best Hotels in Tromso –
Radisson Blu Tromso – This was my choice of stay and highly recommended due to its central location and a pick up point for all major tour companies.
Comfort Hotel Xpress – Great service and a little more pocket friendly than Radisson.
Boukersen Heim – Highly rated budget hotel in Tromso
Top Tours in Tromso Norway –
Tromso Northern Lights Photo excursion – This was OUR pick after endless research so you can’t go wrong here.
Tromso Reindeer feeding and chance of Northern Lights viewing at Sami village – Loved this tour with intro to Sami culture and northern lights over the beautiful village.
From Tromsø: Snowmobiling Tour at Camp Tamok – Interesting day tour from Tromsø for adventure lovers
The very first souvenir store we entered in Tromso was a cute Sami-themed one right in the middle of Tromso city center. The store was very aptly called Sami Shop AS Tromso and had the cutest reindeer taxidermy outside.

Click here for the store location on Google Maps.
Let’s just say I finished 90% of my souvenir shopping in this one souvenir shop Tromso itself – and the remaining few trinkets I purchased from the airport. Surely one of the best Tromso souvenir shop I found.
However, for my friend Shivani, this was a good warm-up – and this was after she bought almost anything and everything one can think of (whilst staying within the baggage limit).
She spent another full day just shopping for gifts and souvenirs to take back home from Tromso. Then again a major portion of duty-free buys & unique souvenirs from Norway airport – and of course from our next destination Finland.
Not judging at all, in fact, this gave me good insights on what to buy in Tromso and the perfect gifts to take back home.
Enough intel to write a detailed blog post and help out fellow travelers and other souvenir aholics 😉
Best Tromso Souvenirs and Gifts to Take Back Home
Here’s a low down of my favorite items to buy from Tromso, Norway. However, you can pick and choose. There are a lot of animal-related items so feel free to skip the post altogether if you feel squirmish. Definitely keep some time for souvenir shopping in your Tromso itinerary.
Reindeer Skins

Don’t worry no reindeer were harmed during this.
Reindeer skins or pelts are used widely in Scandinavia for their warmth and decoration, especially amidst the sami tribe. They are by-products of reindeer husbandry which is very common in these areas.
However, do note the reindeer pelts are rough and brittle so your best bet would be to just hang them on a wall as decoration.
Winter wear, Knitwear
You can find hoards of knitwear, woolens and winter wear. From shoes to socks, caps to mufflers, jackets to thermals – there’s anything and everything warm you can think of.

Reindeer Antler Artifacts
Reindeer antler artifacts make for excellent gifts especially since they are 100% sustainable practice. Since reindeer naturally shed their antlers and are regrown, they are widely used across Scandinavia for gift items.

My favorite item was a reindeer antler bottle opener – I purchased it as a special gift for my friend’s new home bar and it was greatly appreciated.

There was also tons of cute cutlery, nail cutters and more items using this product.
Cutest Fridge Magnets

Fridge magnets are my go-to souvenirs and I try to buy at least a couple in every destination I visit.
At the Sami shop ,I found some of the cutest fridge magnets in Tromso. Hands down, these trolls were simply adorable.

Viking symbols jewelry/ stones
Since I have Viking runes inked on my neck, the Viking symbols also fascinated me.

There was everything from magnets to keyrings to jewelry with vikung symbols engraved on them.
Dried Norwegian Cod Snacks

Dried fish snacks are very popular in Norway. One popular brand is Torrfish which sells these delicious pure nature cod stock from Northern Norway. These make for great snacks and are packed with protein.
Nordic Animal Books/ Stuff Toys – Ideal for Kids
Some popular Nordic animals we saw on most trinkets were Reindeer, Polar bears, Huskies and Moose.

We bought keyrings, stuffed toys and so much more. As animal lovers (and kids ourselves), we absolutely loved these items. I surely spent the most on these cuties and have no regrets at all.

Reindeer/ Whale and Moose Salami
Okay I didn’t even try these out but they are a real delicacy here and easy to take back home. Unpacked, they can last for months, making it perfect gift items even for long term travelers. Surely one of the best Norway souvenirs and the most sought after.

You can choose from Reindeer, Whale or Moose and in some supermarkets you can even try before you buy.
Brown Cheese/ Caviar & other edible items
Brown cheese is the number one Norwegian souvenir for travelers to take back home.
As a cheese lover, I was excited to try it out but when I did, and realized it had a sweet tone, I had to skip it.
Caviar, canned sardines, chocolates and wine are all good options as well. These are the best Norwegian gifts to bring home and suitable for everyone.

Other Cute Trinkets/ Misc Items
Think birch bark items, shot glasses, towels, skin care items, clothes, jewelry – there’s so much to shop for in Tromso. Thankfully, we just had 4 days in Tromso so we were forced to cut our shopping sprees short.

So this was our list of best Tromso souveniers to buy when in Norway – Tromso shopping at its best.
