Sri Lanka Nightlife south coast

Sri Lanka Nightlife [South Coast Circuit – Weligama, Ahangama, Mirissa, Hiriketya & More]

This Sri Lanka nightlife guide is perfect for those visiting any/ all beach towns on this route – Weligama, Ahangama, Midigama, Mirissa, Madiha, Hiriketya & Hikkaduwa.

After spending a couple of weeks exploring the south coast of Sri Lanka as a DJ and a travel blogger, I can safely say I have become the official Sri Lanka nightlife insider by default. I had strangers messaging me on my DJ Instagram handle and even stopping me on the streets asking me, “Where’s the party tonight?.”

This also made me realize how little information there is online about the weekly parties on the south coast of Sri Lanka so I decided to “educate” my fellow party goers on what’s happening on which day of the week & where.

Please note that these are the parties happening in April which is the shoulder season (tail end of the peak season) so a few parties have now already ended. Please check the Instagram pages (given here) for each bar before getting your party shoes on.

Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa has calmed down this season but usually its one of the biggest party hotspots in South of Sri Lanka. Popular places here are – Mambos, Funky de bar, Yula, Vibration and more.

Midigama

Legit in the middle of Ahangama and Weligama, this is the best base for you as a party goer. With Tuesday night madness at Lazies and lovely bars by the beachfront, you can enjoy Midigama’s slow paced vibe.

Madiha

One of the best parties on the south coast of Sri Lanka happens at the Doctor’s House in Madiha (Around 40 mins drive from Weligama), every Wednesday and Saturday (in season). Post which move next door to Shima Guni beach club for more insanity.

Mirissa

Mirissa is one of the hot spots for party lovers traveling to Sri Lanka. With Taboo beach bar, Lava (beachfront pre-game spot), Salt and other hotspots, Mirissa is a must add to your south coast party circuit.

Let me also tell you a little bit about the vibe, music genres etc at each spot and my personal favorites.

Mono – Mono turned out to be one of my favorite secret speakeasies on the Sri Lankan south coast. This new hotspot is owned by a fellow DJ – Rob, who is quite well known in the Sri Lankan music circuits. As a traveling DJ myself, I had the honor of playing at Mono twice and loved every bit of it. The music genres in general on the island are primarily house and R&B. Mono has a more eclectic vibe and they love experimenting with music.

For example, I played some Indie dance/Indo house mixed with afro / tech and even techno. It was well received by the audience. Similarly, I  have seen other DJ’s mix Tamil/ afro/ club hits etc in their sets at Mono. They even have exclusive nights like vinyl nights, no phone parties and more.

The best part about Mono – there are no signboards at all. You literally have to “Find mono” as their Insta handle suggests. All you will see is a red door in a very normal residential block. Even I went in with hesitation the very first time with the assumtion I am probably breaking into someone’s house by mistake. Love the vibe Rob and Martina have co-created for Mono and the eclectic mix of expats/ travelers and musical genres.

Entry – Free . Best Days to Visit – Wednesdays/ Sundays and special nights.

The Doctor’s House – The Doctor’s House is a vibe in itself. No visit to the south coast of Sri Lanka is complete without checking out this hotspot.

At the Doctor’s house you can enjoy mouth-watering pizza, beer on tap, get inked, get piercings, shop, listen to live bands, and party to club music DJs till midnight. DJ nights are only twice a week and those are the most popular nights.

From 5-6 pm you can enjoy free entry, happy hours and deals for unlimited pizza and beer. It’s a great place to hangout and meet other fellow travelers/ expats.

Entry – Free before 6 pm and 2000 LKR after that  . Best Days to Visit – Wednesdays/ Saturdays

Shima Guni Beach Club –

Located in Madiha, right next door to the Doctor’s House, Shima Guni has the best DJ nights to get you going till wee hours of the morning. With a pool where everyone can jump in, food, drinks and good music, Shima Guni is the perfect after party spot.

Entry – 1500 LKR . Best Days to Visit – Wednesdays/ Saturdays – after midnight.

Lamana –

Located in Ahangama, Lamana is a unique party spot with a skating rink in the middle. This adds to the charm and allure of Lamana.

With DJs pumping out club hits, R&B and reggaeton, you can be assured of a wild party at Lamana. Go around 9 pm and dance till midnight. Mind you, it can get very crowded so go early to skip the massive crowds.

You can watch the skaters while you sip your beers or dance away to the beats.

Entry – 2000 LKR . Best Days to Visit – Thursday/ Sunday.

Secret Jungle Party Hiriketya –

Secret jungle party is in Hiriketya – around 1.5 hours from the Weligama strip. You can either go there one day prior like we did or just take a tuk tuk especially for the party.

The party location is unknown so you meed at the Hiriketya supermarket and there are party bus shuttles every 30 mins to and fro the venue.

Honestly, I loved the funky loud party bus concept a lot more than the actual party itself. The actual party was on a secret beach stretch with good music but bad crowd (Atleast when I went). There were only 2 washrooms for hundreds of people and a packed bar.

Apart from these minor issues, it is still a must try for all party lovers visiting Sri Lanka.

Entry – 4000 LKR . Best Days to Visit – Wednesdays/ Sundays and special nights.

Secret Pearl Bar –

One of the best parties in Weligama is the Secret Pearl Bar. This also has more hard groove/ trance/ psy kind of vibe which no other place plays on the strip.

So if you want to party hard till wee hours of dawn, this is the place to be every Saturday.

Entry – 5000 LKR . Best Days to Visit – Saturdays.

Hakuna Matata –

One of my favorite beach bars in Ahangama, hands down.

I  love the vibe at Hakuna Matata all day long. I used to go there for brunch (awesome curries with rice) and blue green waters where you can watch Cormorants and Sea Gulls fish. It is also amazing for sundowners and their iconic after parties.

You need to head here every Wed/ Sunday after you get done from Lamana at midnight. Hakuna Matata is THE place to be for sunsets, parties and good food. Don’t miss it.

Entry – 2000 LKR on party nights . Best Days to Visit – Wednesdays/ Sundays and special nights.

Lazies –

Another cool rooftop party on the south coast of Sri Lanka happens every Tuesday night at Lazies. Not to be missed as this is surely the best party in town on a Tuesday.

Entry – Free before 8 pm, 1000 LKR after 8 and 2000 LKR after 11 pm . Best Days to Visit – Wednesdays/ Sundays.

Beach break surf hostel –

Pretty much just a rooftop DJ party – much like Kurundu. The only party happening on a Monday in shoulder season.

Entry – 1000 LKR after 9 pm . Best Days to Visit – Mondays

Sticks surf club –

2+1 on cocktails every Wednesday, makes Sticks a cool sunset spot to check out. With waves coming right up to your table, I love the vibe at Sticks a lot. Plus they have mouth watering tacos.

Entry – Free . Best Days to Visit – Wednesdays.

Lava cafe –

Think warm, glowing fairy lights all around – the perfect Instagram-friendly beach shack in Mirissa is – the Lava cafe. Best place to pre-game and enjoy your dinner and drinks before the wild partying begins.

Entry – Free . Best Days to Visit – All.

General Tips for Partying in Sri Lanka –

Sri lanka parties best bars clubs beach shacks

  1. Always carry cash – Most clubs only allow entry to be paid in cash. You can pay for drinks later using your card but atleast for the entry , you need enough cash.
  2. Take a Tuk tuk via PickMe – Use PickMe app and get a tuk tuk on your party nights. Avoid drinking and driving as there are check points everywhere and also for your own safety, ofcourse. If you cannot find a tuk tuk on the app in the morning once you are done partying, just walk to the main road for best rates. Don’t take tuk tuk’s from right outside the party spots unless you want to pay 4-10x more.
  3. Wear comfortable, closed shoes as floors can get slippery.
  4. Always carry a hand fan – This became my go-to party essential, especially in April due to high levels of humidity.
  5. Go in peak season – Go in peak season from Oct – Mar or check each bars Insta stories for live updates. Most places are closed in off season (from May onwards) and a few spots are still open in shoulder season April when I visited.

So this is my handpicked curation based on my own personal experiences of partying in these spots. This list cost me multiple hangovers so you can be sure it’s the real deal and you can follow the weekly Sri Lankan party calender blindly.
