Oahu is known as a stunning Hawaiian island with beautiful beaches, stunning mountains and year-long tropical weather.
What you might not know, is that Oahu is also an incredible place for hiking. Hawaii is considered a very safe place for solo female travelers, and Oahu has countless hikes that feature everything from panoramic ocean views to jungle foliage to waterfalls.
This guide is going to dive into the best sunrise hikes on Oahu for solo female travelers, giving you all the details on which views are worth waking up early for.
Best Sunrise Hikes in Oahu worth Waking up Early For
Diamond Head Monument Hike

Diamond Head is conveniently located in Honolulu, and it’s a beautiful hike that gives you great views of the Diamond Head Crater.
It is also easily accessible with organized parking, paved trails and a climb that’s easy enough for hikers that aren’t in amazing shape.
Diamond Head is also very heavily trafficked, so it’s a very safe place to hike early in the morning, even if you’re a solo female traveler.
In total, the hike is 1.6 miles round trip, and it does include quite a few stairs. Parking is $5 per car or $1 per pedestrian, and pets aren’t allowed. The park opens at 6am, making it ideal for a sunrise hike.
Another perk of doing a sunrise hike is that you are much more likely to have the trail to yourself or with only a few others at such an early hour.
This makes it significantly easier to enjoy the views and get great photos of the sunrise over Honolulu.
As of 2022, reservations are required for both parking and park entrance – you can find all the info regarding reservations at the Diamond Head Monument website.
Photography tip: There are beautiful lookout points at the top of Diamond Head overlooking the mountains, and there should be plenty of space to set up a tripod.
Lanikai Pillbox Hike

The Lanikai Pillbox hike is one of my absolute favorite hikes in Oahu because of its out-of-this-world views of Lanikai beach.
The hike is moderately difficult and takes between 1-2 hours to complete, leading you to the pillbox buildings at the top of the trail.
The hike is fairly steep and includes a lot of uphill hiking, so I would definitely recommend wearing closed shoes and very comfortable clothes.
It is also worth noting that there isn’t designated parking for the Lanikai Pillbox hike as it is located in the middle of a residential area, and you will need to plan to park on the street and make sure you’re in a no-tow zone.
If you do this hike at sunrise, you are much more likely to find parking and deal with less of a crowd.
The ocean views from this hike are beautiful at any time of day, but there are few places on the island where you would likely have a better view of the sunrise.
Lanikai Pillbox hike is also a fan-favorite photo destination on Instagram, so arriving early will likely give you a little more privacy and time to get some great photos without competing with 200 other people.
Crouching Lion Hike

Of all the hikes on this list, Crouching Lion is probably the most rugged and steep, but it also comes with incredible panoramic views of the ocean.
One of the best parts about the Crouching Lion hike is that it has beautiful views all throughout your climb, rather than only at the top.
Crouching Lion is also less marked and harder to find than the other hikes, with street parking only on Kamehameha Hwy.
The hike itself is marked by a sign that says “area closed,” and you will need to go past those signs till you get to the actual trailhead.
Crouching Lion is a fairly short hike, and takes about 30-45 minutes on the way up, and about 20-25 minutes on the way back down.
You definitely need to wear closed shoes and be prepared to use ropes on the way up, as it is very steep and can be slippery.
The trail is also dusty and can be muddy, so I would not recommend attempting this hike if there are bad weather conditions.
This hike is also more remote than the others on this list, and while it felt incredibly safe, I would urge situational awareness and making sure you have a phone with you at all times.
Manoa Falls Hike

Unlike many of the hikes on this list, Manoa Falls trail leads to a beautiful waterfall, rather than a sweeping ocean view.
It is a very easy hike that is more of a walk, and the total distance is 1.6 miles over fairly flat terrain.
Like Diamond Head, Manoa Falls is close to Honolulu and easy to access. Before getting to the waterfall, the trail leads you through beautiful jungle foliage that looks like something out of avatar.
While this trail won’t give you the insane sunrise ocean views that some of the others on this list will, I highly recommend doing it at sunrise or early in the day to avoid crowds.
This trail is incredibly popular because of its proximity to Honolulu, so the earlier you go, the more you can enjoy the trail without insane crowds.
It is worth noting that because Manoa Falls trail goes through a jungle area and leads to a waterfall, the ground can be damp and muddy.
While it is an easy hike, I would recommend wearing closed shoes to avoid the mud and enjoy the hike.
